Black Mountain (NC) NEWS 1 Thursday, May 27, 1948 SECTION I Dr. Weatherford Heard At High School Finals Thirty Students were graduated from Black Mountain High school at commencement exercises held Wednesday night in the grammar school auditorium. Principal speaker for the evening, intro duced by Bill Morris, was Dr. VV. D. Weatherford. The Rev. W. H. Styles gave the invocation. The valedictory address was given by Miss Mabel Meeks, and the saluta tory by Miss Joyce Gouge. N. C. Shuford, superintendent of schools, made the presentation of awards and diplomas. The bene diction was pronounced by the Rev. H. Rhvs. Also on the pro gram were numbers by the glee club and the double trio, Lucy Fortune, Mabel Patton, Pat Mc- Dougle, Sara McDougle, Dorothy Hendricks, and Bonnie Cranfili. Miss Caroline Atkins presented the gift to the school. The baccalaureate sermon was delivered by the Rev. W. A. Huneycutt Sunday night. The invocation and benediction for this service were given by the Rev. Eugene Byrd and the ‘ Rev. Thad McDonald. Junior marshalls, selected on the basis of scholarship, were Mary Jo Atkins, Peggy Morrow, Betty Ruth Reid, Borden Sabiston, Herbert Hunter, and Larry Glenn. Mascots were Carol Guy and Bobby Byrd. Those receiving their diplomas were: Caroline Atkins,, Arrietta Burnette, Anna Marie Bunnell, Louise Carver, Mrs. Geraldine Chandler, Atriee Cranfili, Lucy Fortune, Floyd Fox, Joyce Gouge, Charles Henderson, Orieta Holli field, Camilla Hudgins, Gene Hughey, Jereline McCall, Pat Mc- Dougle, Mable Meeks, William Morris, Richard Morrow, Tressie Nanney, Edna Ownbey, Mabel Patton, Clarence Padgett, Blanche Putnam, Celeste Sabiston, Mrs. Georgia McCall, Eva Swann, Bobby Swayngim, Wilma Wil liams, Anne Summey, and the G.l. graduate: Alvis Osteen. Brittain Wins Contest Mrs. Elizabeth Brittain, Box 471, Black Mountain, won a $lO cash prize in the nation-wide SIO,OOO Peach Contest conducted bv the Birds Eye-Snider Division of General Foods Corporation ac cording to an announcement today by company officials in New York. The winning entry blank was ob tained at Black Mountain grocery. The contest, the first to be held by the pioneer and leader in the frozen foods industry, drew en tries from every section of the country. SEE DAUGHTER GRADUATE Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Hallman of Sanford spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Byrd. Ac companied by the Byrds, they at tended the commencement exer cises at Montreat, where their daughter, Miss Margaret Ann Hallman, was graduated from Montreat School for Girls. DANCING CLASSES Miss Marguerite Hyatt, teacher of rhythm and dancing of Ashe ville, will come to Black Mountain one day each week, beginning June 1, if enough children between the ages of five and nine are interested. Persons who wish in formation may call Mrs. W. W. White. AT SYLVESTERS’ Mr. and Mrs. Howard Edgerton and Miss Virginia Bradshaw of Elon college spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Sylvester. On Saturday evening all were dinner guests of Mrs. Ruth Cun ningham and Jimmy.
